Okinawa is bigger than you think...

Looking at the world map you can find Japan right bellow Korea.  Okinawa is a small dot in the ocean at the west edge of Japan.  Even just looking at the map of Okinawa the island appears to be very small.  However, Okinawa is bigger than you could imagine.  It takes a whole day to drive around the island by car without stopping other than lunch break or emergency calls.  Most national highways are regulated up to 50km/h and other roads are 40km/h.  That means that it takes time to travel even a short distance on the map.  The maximum speed for Okinawa's only pay-road is limited to 80km/h even though most people drive around 90km/h.  However, the road conditions of the toll highway is excellent that it takes only an hour from Naha to Kyoda, which is the end of the highway.  Therefore, it is good to take "enough time" into account before you make your travel plan.

Naha, the capital city of Okinawa is located in the south of the island.  There are lots of historical sites such as Shuri Castle and Okinawa Prefectual Peace Memorial Museum.  Okinawa City is actually located in the middle area.  Numbers of US millitary bases are also located in this area.  Tropical forest called "Yanbaru" and wildlife can be seen in the north area.  The world's largest aquarium opened in the Fall of 2002 is also in this area..
