Touring Okinawa on a motorcycle is a wonderful experience.  To make your trip safe and enjoyable it is very helpful to know Okinawa's traffic situation.  If you have some experiences driving on Japanese road you may notice a bit different driving culture when driving Okinawa.  The following is the list of things that Mista-T has recognized riding on the island for your reference.

Road Condition

- Most main roads are smooth and well-constructed
- The road color is somewhat brighter than the ones in mainland Japan
- The white lines on the road are scrached off in many places that it makes you
hard to see where you are going
- The stop line for the intersection is hard to tell because of scrached paint and
  its unexpecting location.
- The surface of the road gets really slippery when its wet.  Be careful especially
the first 10 to 20 minutes after started raining.
- The road condition of Okinawa Espress Highway is perfect shape.
- There are many road constructings going on all around east coast, north area.
- Some intersections do not have trafic light at all four cournets even if one direction has it.

Driving Manners

- Since Okinawa is car society, people of all ages drive their car.  Be alert to the
cars with green or brown leaf sticker on them.  Green leaf represents the driver
is a beginner and brown leaf means the driver is a sinior.
- Okinawans tend to forget using turn signals when they turn corners.  They
sometimes use the signal just one second before they turn.
- You might be amazed to see people park thier cars on sidewalks.
- Okinawa's taxi has the worset driving manner.  They do not follow the traffic
rules at all.  That means they often go on red or making a turn in no-turn zone.
- Okinawans think that riding a motorcycle especially a moped on sidewalk is not
illegal but that's what they do everyday.
- People tend to drive within the speed limit on express highway.
- So many riders try to go through sides of cars and have accidents.
- Not many car drivers would expect or see a motorcycle when they change lanes.

Climate

- The climate on the island is easy to change.  Even the perfect fine weather in
the morning may have rain shower in the afternoon all of sudden.  It is good to
carry a raincoat all the time when you go out for a long touring.
- Ultraviolet lay in Okinawa is very strong.  It is said that Okinawa has six time
stronger ultraviolet lay compared to Kagoshima, the very west of mainland
Japan.  I recommend to wear sunglasses and use lots of sun screen for your
  skin to protect yourself.
- Thanks to the mild climate of Okinawa, you don't need a thick jacket or winter
riding wear all year around on the island.
- Okinawa experiences lots of typhoons every year.  It is wise to cancel your trip if
a typhoon approached close to Okinawa islands.
- Never ever try to enjoy riding your bike during typhoon warning because you can't.
